Newcastle United Foundation has invited prominent Newcastle lawyer John Marshall, senior partner at Dickinson Dees, to join its Board of Trustees.

Born and brought up in Newcastle and a keen Newcastle United fan, John is not only passionate about how his football team performs on the pitch, he's also passionate about how the Foundation can use its links with football to make a real difference in the local community.

Newcastle United Foundation is an independent registered charity, although it enjoys valuable support from Newcastle United Football Club in delivering its objectives.  It aims to engage young people in active and healthy lifestyles, as well as motivating them to enjoy their learning and achieve their true potential through its Enterprise academy.  Last year the Foundation was able to work with over 26,000 people across the region through its sporting, education, health and inclusion programmes.

John is looking forward to his new role as Trustee, saying:

"Newcastle United Foundation can and does make a real and sustained difference to local communities in the North East. The Foundation harnesses the local passion for football to encourage learning.  It also promotes a healthy lifestyle that can make a real difference to the lives of children, young people and families in the region, particularly those from our most deprived areas.

"That this work is supported by the Football Club, and particularly the players, shows their desire to put something back into the area.  This is about helping to encourage everyone to aim high and achieve their potential."

"Dickinson Dees has a longstanding commitment to supporting worthy causes in the region.  Like many other charities, cuts in grant and public funding challenge those running these programmes.  I hope in the coming months that members of the business community will learn more of the excellent work of the Foundation and feel able to get involved to support its activities."

Head of Newcastle United Foundation,  Kate Bradley said:

"Newcastle United Foundation has grown year on year since it launched in 2008, and our trustees play a very important role in our success. John brings with him key skills which will be of huge benefit to our charity, particularly in relation to strategic direction, business planning, fundraising strategy and public relations."
